EV Training for Mechanics: What UK Garage Owners Need to Know

EV volumes are still relatively low at most independent garages, but that's not a reason to delay training. The garages getting ahead of this are the ones that will attract EV-owning customers early — before those customers form habits with a dealer or a competitor. Here's a practical guide to what EV training actually involves and how to make it work for an independent garage team.

Why EV training matters now (even with low EV volumes)

The immediate reason is safety. An electric vehicle that hasn't been properly isolated before work begins can carry several hundred volts through its high-voltage cables. A technician who treats an EV like an ICE car is at serious risk. Even routine work like inspecting underbody components needs awareness of where high-voltage cables run.

The business reason is positioning. EV owners currently struggle to find independent garages they trust to touch their cars. A garage with certified technicians and clear messaging about EV capability will attract customers that competitors without training can't serve. Getting one or two technicians qualified now costs far less than trying to catch up in three years when volumes are higher and training providers are busier.

There's also liability to consider. If an unqualified technician works on a high-voltage system and something goes wrong — with the vehicle, or with the technician — the absence of appropriate training is difficult to defend.

The three levels of EV training

The IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) has established a three-tier framework for EV qualifications that is widely recognised across the UK automotive industry.

  • Level 1 — Awareness: An introductory online course covering EV basics, hazard awareness, and safe working practices around electric vehicles. Typically 2–4 hours. This is designed for anyone who works in or around vehicles — not just technicians. Receptionists, service advisers, and MOT testers who interact with EVs should all complete this level.
  • Level 2 — Inspection and Maintenance: A more in-depth course covering how to inspect, maintain, and test EV systems safely without working on live high-voltage components. Includes practical elements. Suitable for technicians who do routine servicing on hybrids and EVs but won't be doing drivetrain or battery repairs.
  • Level 3 — High Voltage Systems: The full qualification for working on live high-voltage components — traction batteries, inverters, motors, and associated systems. This is what your technicians need to be able to diagnose and repair EV-specific faults, not just do the routine work. It requires passing both theory and practical assessments.

Which qualification your technicians actually need

The short answer: at least one technician in your garage should hold a Level 3 qualification if you want to offer proper EV servicing.

For the rest of your team, Level 1 Awareness is the minimum sensible baseline — it ensures nobody inadvertently does something dangerous with an EV in the workshop. Level 2 is valuable for technicians who will regularly work on the non-high-voltage parts of EVs and hybrids (underbody, brakes, tyres, suspension) and want to understand the systems they're working around.

If you're an independent garage with two or three technicians, getting one to Level 3 and the others to Level 1 is a reasonable starting position. That one Level 3 technician becomes the person who handles EV-specific work and can advise colleagues on safe practices.

Approved EV training providers in the UK

Several providers offer IMI-accredited EV training:

  • Independent training providers — companies like Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Repair Alliance (HEVRA) members offer courses, often with more flexible scheduling

Before booking, confirm that the course leads to an IMI-accredited qualification rather than just a provider certificate. IMI accreditation is the recognised industry standard.

How much EV training costs and how to fund it

Costs vary significantly by provider and level:

  • Level 1 Awareness: £50–£150 per person for the online course
  • Level 2: £300–£600 per technician including practical assessment
  • Level 3: £500–£1,200 per technician, depending on provider and whether equipment costs are included

Funding options worth exploring:

  • Apprenticeship levy — if you take on apprentices, EV training can be incorporated into an apprenticeship standard, reducing out-of-pocket cost significantly
  • Local training providers — FE colleges typically charge less than commercial training centres for the same IMI-accredited outcome
  • OZEV grants — the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles has run grant schemes for EV training in the past; check current availability at gov.uk as these are periodically renewed
  • Trade body support — the IMI, RMI, and SMMT sometimes facilitate discounted group training for member garages

Making EV training work for an independent garage team

The practical challenge for an independent garage is taking a technician off the ramp for a week's training. A few approaches that work:

  • Send one technician at a time, stagger the training over several months, and use the first-trained technician to brief the rest of the team on Level 1 basics
  • Look for evening or weekend courses — several providers offer these specifically for working technicians
  • Check whether any providers offer on-site training for small groups, which avoids travel time and can be cheaper per head
  • Time training for quieter periods — January and February tend to be slower for many garages
